portraits of myself.

I absolutely hate having my photo taken especially if my face is in. I thought seeing I had a dramatic colour change recently I would do dome self portraits inspired by the photographer Heiner Luepke who is actually 5 years younger than me but he has some beautiful work his work is predominately set outside near water and trees which I might do next. I like looking at others work and doing my interpretation. It inspires me to go one further and make something out of it which is original.

Kids with the Cameras. Session one.

So today is the first session of the kids with the cameras project from 2pm-6pm at the courthouse ARTS building. It is very exciting, hopefully someone turns up! Today we will just discuss photography as an art form and the opportunities it offers. All participants, (max 12) will be supplied with a package which includes the most important part of the project a visual diary! This will be taken home where they are asked to collect images that inspire them, images which the like the light or composition or even the subject matter. These images will be glued into their diaries and an explanation of why they like it and what they would change to improve the image. It has been very well received by council and the art community I just hope I can come through with an “amazing as it sounds” effort!! So lets see how we go!

Still Life- Single light.

Single Light Source. Still Life. – BIRDS ON A BOOK.

This is a good way to practice using light as the most important feature of your image, in the above image it was important that the light was subtle. You can nearly see the third bird (everything works better in odd numbers, one, three, five items)  but enough for it to be interesting and know it is there. I took this photo with a D80 which was my first Digital SLR. I was use to working with 35mm, this was one of my first attempts at something artistic in a digital format.

Diagrams

It is good to have an idea of how you are going to set up your shot if working in a studio. I have been doing photography for a while now so I typically set up my shots in my head but it is good practice to document it as you go  if you do something fantastic you remember and can repeat the process in the future.

Below you can see a hand drawn diagram, this is perfectly fine, during the “Kids with the cameras” we will be drawing up diagrams such as this in our visual diaries along with inspiring images we will collect along the way. The other diagram is done using an iPhone application- Syliights,  but it is necessary if not available.

I have mentioned what backdrop I have used, where the light was situated, where the camera was positioned and what lens was used. other important factors are what settings the camera was set to!

You will never achieve such an affect with your camera set in auto, (unfortunately the cameras we will be using for the KWTC project will be basic point and shoots, we will how ever work in the studio with my camera so to have the experience).

SETTINGS-  F-stop ? Shutter Speeds? ISO? White Balance?

All very important and will be discussed in detail in future blog entries.

Break-O-Day Hotel, Corindhap.

Great night camping at the Break-O-Day Hotel for Jade’s 30th, great location! It was nice for Jade to invite us, seeing I had left Roller Derby and only speak to Jade in the  street when we see each other. It was a great crowd and it a great excuse to dress up as Tank Girl! These photos are taken using the Olympus Pen then edited in Lightroom.

Classes in Lightroom will start at about week 4 in the Kids with the Cameras project. Lesson Plans and ideas will be posted on this blog very soon.

Happy Birthday Isis!!
